About the artist
German-born studio potter Marianne DeMartini has lived in Auburn since 1981. Her interest in ceramics began at an early age when as a child she created entire market scenes out of modeling clay. Later on, during visits to local museums, her interest was further sparked by pieces of Roman pottery that had been discovered in her home town. Other influences, such as Asian ceramics exhibitions, led her to study ceramic design at the Werkkunstschule (College of Arts and Crafts) Krefeld, Germany, where she received her BFA.
Today Marianne produces handcarved candle lights, large lace bowls, delicate lotus-shaped bowls, and marbled jars made of two clays. The pieces are thrown on a wheel and then carved by hand. After completing the design they are bisque-fired, then stoneware glazes ranging from a muted multi-layered crearm to vibrant blues and greens are applied for a final firing.
